Class 6 Bird watcher

Mrs Fischer felt embarrassed because her eleven year old son, Cyril , created a scene in the presence of their house guest Dr, Rao who had come from India.
  1. Dr. Gopal Rao was an expert on birds. He had come from India.
  2. Cyril loved peeking into birds nests.
  3. Cyril was impressed by Dr. Rao as he shared his childhood adventures regarding his interest in bird watching. Dr. Rao told him he too hated going to school when he was Cyril's age. Instead he loved peeking into birds nests.
  4. As Cyril was going through Dr. Rao's books on birds he saw the picture
of a bird he had seen during one of his bird-watching sessions. He had spotted their nest in a huge oak tree . This surprised Dr. Rao as that bird , the black robin of Chatham Island , was one of the rarest birds . He couldn't believe that Cyril had spotted it.
6.Dr. Rao wanted Cyril to take him to the black robin's nest . He wanted to see the bird for himself and confirm the authenticity of what Cyril had told him.
7.The next morning dr. Rao found two black robins in the oak tree. They twittered and stirred out of their nests.
  1. He planned to steal the eggs of the black robins and mingle them with eggs in other bird's nests. The black robins would then lay fresh eggs . In this manner the number of eggs of this rare bird could be doubled.
  2. Dr. Rao instructed Cyril to wash his hands , dry them , and lift the bird's eggs very carefully with a spoon like an instrument and transfer them into a container. Both the spoon and container had been rinsed in a disinfectant . Next he had to place an egg in each of the two warlber's nests. They marked both the trees . He was asked to destroy the robin's nest , so that they would build a new nest and lay fresh eggs.
  3. He cleaned up the warbler's nest as the droppings of the baby black robin did not fall out of the small nest. During cold spells the baby might have caught a chill and died . So he cleaned the nest.

SST. Class 4. Our Natural Resources- Forests

1.Coal and petroleum are non -renewable resources because they are limited and reduce in quantity as they are used.
2.Forests are large areas of land thickly covered with trees. They are useful to us in the following ways:-
a) Trees and plants give us the oxygen we need to breathe.
b) The roots of the trees prevent the soil from being washed away.
c) They provide us with food , fruits, timber, medicines etc.
d) Forests provide shelter to animals and birds.
3.Evergreen forests are green throughout the year. The trees here are tall and do not shed their leaves at the same time. They are found in areas with heavy rainfall such as Western Ghats, North East India and Andaman and Nicobar Islands . Trees found here are :- rosewood, ebony and mahagony.
4.Deforestation leads to soil getting washed away , floods and landslides . There is less rainfall and less oxygen for us to breathe. Many animals , birds and people lose their homes when forests are cut down.
5.Wildlife sanctuaries are set up to protect wildlife . We have a large variety of animals and they are hunted by us for their skin ,fur ,horn and tusks. So the government has set up Sanctuaries to protect animals and forests.
