Bird watcher
1.Mrs Fischer felt embarrassed because
her eleven year old son, Cyril , created a
scene in the presence of their house guest
Dr, Rao who had come from India.
2. Dr. Gopal Rao was an expert on
birds. He had come from India.
3. Cyril loved peeking into birds
nests.
4. Cyril was impressed by Dr. Rao as
he shared his childhood adventures
regarding his interest in bird watching.
Dr. Rao told him he too hated going to
school when he was Cyril's age.
Instead he loved peeking into birds
nests.
5. As Cyril was going through Dr.
Rao's books on birds he saw the
picture
of a bird he had seen during one of his
birdwatching sessions. He had spotted
their nest in a huge oak tree . This
surprised Dr. Rao as that bird , the black
robin of Chatham Island , was one of the
rarest birds . He couldn't believe that Cyril
had spotted it.
6.Dr. Rao wanted Cyril to take him to the
black robin's nest . He wanted to see the
bird for himself and confirm the
authenticity of what Cyril had told him.
7.The next morning dr. Rao found two
black robins in the oak tree. They
twittered and stirred out of their nests.
8. He planned to steal the eggs of the
black robins and mingle them with
eggs in other bird's nests. The black
robins would then lay fresh eggs . In
this manner the number of eggs of this
rare bird could be doubled.
9. Dr. Rao instructed Cyril to wash his
hands , dry them , and lift the bird's
eggs very carefully with a spoon like
an instrument and transfer them into a
container. Both the spoon and
container had been rinsed in a
disinfectant . Next he had to place an
egg in each of the two warlber's nests.
They marked boththe trees . He was
asked to destroy the robin's nest , so
that they would build a new nest and
lay fresh eggs.
10. He cleaned up the warbler's nest as
the droppings of the baby black robin
did not fall out of the small nest.
During cold spells the baby might have
caught a chill and died . So he cleaned
the nest.
11. A3 1.Mrs Fischer was right in a way because like
any other mother she was worried about her son not
wanting to go to school.
4. Dr. Rao did not lecture him on the importance of
attending school, did not discourage his love of bird- watching , instead kindled his interest ,involved him in
saving black robins. Cyril felt important and wanted to
help . He found someone who appreciated him.
ON KILLING A TREE
Ans 1.No, a tree cannot be destroyed quickly. A simple jab
of knife cannot kill a tree as it has grown slowly
consuming the earth and absorbing years of sunlight , air,
and water. Its roots are deep down in the earth.
Ans. THE TREES “LEPROUS HIDE “ IS THE SKIN
RESEMBLING THAT OF A LEPER , refers to the
discoloured bark of the tree.
Ans. 3. In spite of the harm done to the tree, the bleeding
bark will heal and from close to the ground will rise curled
green twigs. If they are unchecked , they will expand again
to former size as the earth , has anchored and protected the
tree strongly and firmly.
Ans 4. The most important thing to do while killing a tree
is to ensure that the root is pulled out of the earth, its
source of security and stability. The tree is to tied with
rope and pulled , perfectly snapped out to expose its white
and wet roots.
Ans . 5. After uprooting the tree its strength is exposed ,
from the very source that is its white and wet roots. The
root which is the most important and sensitive part has
been hidden for many years inside the earth and it is only a
matter of drying it in the schorching heat of the sun
render it lifeless. In the end , the tree will go through a
process of browning , hardening, twisting and withering
and ultimately , the tree gets killed.
A2.1. a) After hacking a tree from close to the ground its
bark may heal and produce curled green twigs. The growth
of these twigs must be checked.
b) If the growth of these miniature boughs are unchecked ,
they will expand again to their former sizes and the tree
will grow back.
c) The poet is absolutely broken at the callousness of man.
Beyond the physical process of killing a tree , the poet
hints at how modern man out of his remorseless selfishness
dares to uproot nature and its very soul
