EUREKA
Ans 1. Hiero was the king
of Syracuse. He wanted the biggest crown in the world.
Ans 2. He called the
goldsmith to fashion a crown that would make every other king want to
possess it. For this he gave ten pounds of pure gold to the
goldsmith.
Ans3. The king instructed
the goldsmith to put every grain of gold and not to use any other
metal with it .
Ans 4. Archimedes was a
very wise man in the king's court . Though he found the workmanship
of the crown exquisite, he was suspicious of the quality of the
gold.It was a brilliant yellow . It did not have the same rich colour
as the lump of gold given to him by the king.
Ans 5.The challange before
him was to invent a method to measure the purity of the gold used to
make the crown without causing the crown any damage.
Ans 6. One morning when
Archimedes stepped into the bath tub a quantity of water flowed out
of it . He got the idea that if he put Hiero's crown into it , it
would also displace a bulk of water. Gold is much heavier than any
other metal such as silver or brass. So if the king's crown was of
pure gold it would displace less water. If the crown was not of pure
gold it would displace a larger bulk. So it was proved that the
crown was not pure gold when it was tested.
Ans 7. Eureka means , I
have found it. Archimedes suddenly hit upon the idea of testing the
purity of gold. In this manner he helped the entire world with his
invention. Hence these words have become famous.
