UNDERSTANDING DIVERSITY
B1.The presence of a wide range of qualities or features is called diversity.

2. A group of families either living in the same area or having some common links is known as community. 3. India has diversity in religion, food, dress , language and customs.

  1. In the cold places very few crops can be grown, so people eat a lot of non vegetarian food.
  2. Keralas snake boat race tells us that the people of coastal areas have a strong bond with water.
C1. The immediate group in which one lives is the family.
The two main types of families are:-
Nuclear family- In this family only parents and their children live together.
Joint Family – In this family parents , children, grand parents and other close relatives live under a common roof and share the same kitchen.

  1. People in different regions dress differently depending on the climate and customs.
    eg. The people of Kashmir wear a loose robe called pheran. They carry a kangri inside their pheran . The kangri has live charcoals which keeps them warm. Kashmir is a cold area , hence they wear warm clothes.
    D1. People are social beings . Almost everyone prays to God . But some go to temple, others go to church or mosque to pray. Festivals are celebrated in a variety of ways. The harvest festival is celebrated as Baishakhi in Punjab, Onam in Kerala, Bihu in Assam and makar shankranti in Bihar.
