Class 5 Saudi Arabia


SAUDI ARABIA
Ans 1. The climate of Saudi Arabia is hot and dry. The country gets very little rainfall
, the humidity is very low and the sun shines bright and hot throughout the year. The
nights are cool,as the sand in the desert cools down quickly at night. During winter, the nights are very cold.

Ans. 2. Plants like cacti and short shrubs , which can withstand the heat and require less water to
survive and grow in Saudi Arabia. Date palms , wheat and barley are grown in the area.

Ans 3. Peninsula:- A part of land that is jutting out into the sea and is surrounded by sea on three sides is called a peninsula

Oasis:- Places in the desert , where underground water comes to the surface forming fertile areas
is called an oasis.

Ans 5.Saudi Arabia is rich because of vast deposits of petroleum. Petroleum is exported all over the world making Saudi Arabia a rich country.

Class 5 SST CHAPTER 19

Ans. 1. The reformers felt that social ills like the caste system, child marriage and the killing of female babies kept Indian society divided and backward. Ans.2. The reformers felt educating the public would remove outdated customs and superstitious beliefs and would bring progress to India. Ans 4. The moderates wanted reforms so that Indians could live a better life under the Britishrule. But the extremists wanted the British to leave India and demanded self- rule.

Ans 1. The Portuguese were the first to trade with India. Ans 2. Three other European countries that started trading with India were Denmark, France and Britain. Ans3. Each of the countries trading with India wanted a larger share of the trade so they fought among themselves . In the end , Britain won the fight and took the major share rights to trade with India. Class 6. EUREKA

EUREKA Ans 1. Hiero was the king of Syracuse. He wanted the biggest crown in the world. Ans 2. He called the goldsmith to fashion a crown that would make every other king want to possess it. For this he gave ten pounds of pure gold to the goldsmith. Ans3. The king instructed the goldsmith to put every grain of gold and not to use any other metal with it . Ans 4. Archimedes was a very wise man in the king's court . Though he found the workmanship of the crown exquisite, he was suspicious of the quality of the gold.It was a brilliant yellow . It did not have the same rich colour as the lump of gold given to him by the king. Ans 5.The challange before him was to invent a method to measure the purity of the gold used to make the crown without causing the crown any damage.

Class 6. WE ARE SEVEN

ANS 5. The girl told the poet that her sister Jane was confined to bed and lay in pain for quite some time and finally she died . She was thus relieved of her suffering . Later on her brother John also died and was buried in the churchyard by Jane's side. Ans 6. The girl thought that there was no difference between the dead and the living, and they were still seven sisters and brothers. The poet however understands that they are only five now. Reference questions 1.b. The girl says that they are seven brothers and sisters but accounts for only five. The poet wants to know how this could be. c.She gave account of herself, two in Conway and two at sea. But she said they were seven. This puzzles the poet and he questions her about it. 2.a. It was futile trying to explain to the girl. b. The girl thought that there was no difference between the dead and the living.The poet could not convince the little girl that two of them were dead. c. The poet is correct in his calculations. But the girl is young and innocent, so she should be free to follow her own will.

THE UNITED NATIONS Ans 1. The two world Wars left many nations destroyed and millions dead or injured. So the nations of the world came forward to form the United Nations whose main aim was to prevent wars. Ans. 2. The United Nations sends peacekeeping forces to countries which are in danger of war . Ans 4. Gandhiji fought for the rights of the Blacks and Indians in South Africa . He fought for the 'untouchables' whom he called 'Harijans'. He also fought for Hindu - Muslim unity. Ans 7. MULLAH NASRUDDIN and the Nail EX A 1. Q1. A1.Mullah Nasruddin was a local priest in a small village. Q2. A2.No one knew whether he was crazy or a sage because of his strange activities.He was deeply involved in spiritual pursuits and material comforts occupied a secondary place in his life. Q3. A3.Debts accumulated , and he ran out of credit.Eventually he had to sell his ancestral house. Q4. A4.Nasruddin added the clause that he should be allowed to keep the ownership of the nail on the wall of the living room and do whatever he wanted to do with it. Q5. A5.The neighbour convinced his wife that since they are getting the house for half its value there was no harm in allowing Nasruddin to keep the nail.As he only wanted to worship it. Q6. A 6.She was angry because Nasruddin kept returning to worship the nail.The first time he hung his turban,then his scarf,then coat and ultimately brought the sack full of cow dung to hang.Obviously the wife was furious with her husband.She threatened to leave him. Uncle Ken at the Wicket.

Ans 1. Young Ruskin loved to spend his holidays with his grandmother because she was a wonderful cook and she made delicious dishes for him. Ans 2. The author and uncle Ken did not approve of each other .Uncle Ken did not like small boys. Ruskin did not like him as he did not appreciate granny's cooking. They always tried to outdo each other. Ans 3. Uncle Ken had been smoking a cigar under a silk -cotton tree without realizing that there was a bee hive above him. The fumes of the cigar disturbed the bees and they attacked him. So he had to run for his life. Ans 4. Uncle Ken was mistaken for the famous English cricketer , Bruce Hallam at Lucknow station.He resembled Bruce a lot. At the station people welcomed him with garlands and took him to the stadium to play a cricket match. He never protested and even played an innings before running away quietly. Ans 5. His performance on the field was highly appreciated . He could hardly play but still everyone praised him. Even when he was out the spectators blamed the other batsman. Ans 6 Emily was Uncle Ken's sister and the headmistress of a school in Lucknow. She kept him as a guest for a week and then forced him to work in the boys dormitory of her school. A2. 1.a) Uncle Ken said this to granny. b) Granny said that he had'nt had duck since he was there last month. He pretended to agree by adding that one expects variety from her. Then he took two large helpings and most of the stuffing. c)The author knew that Uncle ken loved granny's apple sauce . So he emptied all the sauce onto his plate. 2. c) Granny was not irritated by Uncle Ken's presence. By calling him eccentric . She was making excuses for him. 3.a)He was mistaken to be Bruce Hallam , the famous cricketer . b)It was good for him as he got a rousing reception, a hearty breakfast, lots of compliments and a hearty lunch too. c)From this event we can say that he was very opportunistic but not bad at heart. 4.b) Granny wanted him to go away as he stayed for long with her and did not show any signs of moving out.So she asked him to find a job. c)He said that there were no jobs in Dehra. He reacted with shock when granny asked him to go to his sister in Lucknow.

A MATTER of HONOUR EX A1. Q1. A1.The fasionable amusement among the children of Avonlea was the game 'daring'.Children dared each other to do odd and difficult things. Q2. A2.Before Anne's turn several very amusing acts happened.Ruby Gillis had to climb the huge willow tree to certain point,Jane Andrews had to hop around nonstop on the left leg, and Josie had to walk along the top of the board fence. Q3. A3.She swayed ,lost her balance, stumbled and fell, sliding down the edge of the roof and coming down with a crash. Q4. A4.Anne saw the brighter side of things.Even after falling off the roof and injuring herself grievously she didn't lose her sense of humour and assured Diana that she was not killed but thought she was getting unconscious. Q5. A5.Anne heard that Miss Stacy,the new teacher had curly hair and absolutely fascinating eyes.Every alternate Friday afternoon she took recitation classes , and on other Friday she took her students to the woods for a field day. Every morning and evening she organised physical exercises for the children. EX A2. 1. a)Anne had no choice but to accept Josie's challenge. b)The only thing to be done was for Anne to walk the edge of Mr. Barry's kitchen roof. c)She wanted to outdo Josie's skill of walking along the top of the board fence by walking the edge of a kitcen roof. 2. a)Marilla realised that Anne was more special and dear to her than anyone else. b)The sight of Mr. Barry carrying Anne's limp body was the cause of the revelation. c)She hurried down the slope and enquired after her condition,thus showing her deep and genuine concern for Anne. 3. a)Her school mates were the visitors that Anne had. b)They brought flowers and books for her and talked to her about school and their new teacher. c)Anne was able to find out how many true friends she had.
